Hidden and Not So Hidden Gems of Berkeley
Fran Segal is a well-known Berkeley-based artist, who, like Amy Blackstone in metal, likes to give prominence to California critters, especially endangered species, in her work, which most often involves stone and ceramic mosaics and murals. (Also like Blackstone, she has larger scale creations viewable at the ArtTech building downtown and in the Peralta Community Garden). This private commission gives a fantastic face lift to a garage on Santa Clara and features a red-tailed hawk on one side, a woodpecker on the other. Notice how her choice of tile at the base blends almost seamlessly with the existing rocky wall on either side.
